My Students

My students do excellent work. So well in fact that I wanted to showcase their work, class projects, and other cool things we do here.

The Damascus Community Fair 2008

September 11, 2008

The Damascus Community Fair is a local fair that showcases all types of work from the community.  This year I entered 4 students work in the fair and all students placed.

Ahh, the Computer & Technology Section in all it’s glory.

Digital Graphics - Color

My students made a clean sweep of this category winning first, second, and third.

Delaney Brown placed 1st

Delaney’s piece was a Bert Monroy inspired Photorealism piece of a lakeside scene.  This piece won 1st place but in addition won grand champion or the entire Computer & Technology Category.  Go Delaney!

Jon Carts placed 2nd

Jon was inspired by the FamFamFam icon set, so much that he built almost all 50 state flags.

I will be offering this as a download shortly.  Way to go Jon!

Ryan Pugliese placed 3rd

Ryan created a graphic work defining what design is.  This assignment was inspired by Veerle’s Design Is poster contest, but we changed it to be Web Design is..

Graphic Design - Black and White

Dianna Brittain placed 1st

Dianna Brittain’s take on the Web Design Is assignment, this mix in black and white though.

All of the students did an awesome job and we are so proud!

2007-2008 Visual Sting Clients

January 15, 2008

The 2007-2008 school year was DHS’s first year of teaching the Advanced Web Tools course, which is the second level web design course.  In this class we founded Visual Sting, a student driven web design and development non-profit organization; as a teacher I guide them and teach them, but otherwise do not interfere.  All of the clients receive 100% student created work.  We do not charge for our services but seeing as we are facilitated by public education we enjoy donations.

We had around 4 or 5 clients this Fall, 2 sites are publicly available

Patriot Land and Wildlife Management

Joe Brown, owner, came to us looking for a website with a CMS to allow him to quickly update his site.  Because of our students beginner level or programming we used Wordpress.  The students did some fairly advanced things with this site like Wordpress as a CMS, CSS driven drop down menus, Flickr incorporation, and custom templating.

Upon completion we launched the site and Joe was so excited he made a considerable donation to our program!.  Thanks Joe!

Plotsky Medical

Dr. Plotsky, of his own medical practice, needed a website, in a bad bad way.  He wanted to answer many of the common questions any medical office would need to answer like where are you, how do I schedule an appointment, or what insurance carriers do you support?  In addition, he also wanted a CMS.  After some more discussion we found they were looking for intranet type software to manage a calendar, email, documents, etc.

The students used Wordpress because of it’s light and workable nature for beginners and second, they set up Google Apps for Dr. Plotsky’s office to manage all of their intranet needs.

Dr. Plotsky and manager Patty Gray were so delighted that they not only donated a very large amount to our program but also rewarded the class with cake and presented the 3 students who completed the site with a beautiful plackard that now sits atop Mr. Brown’s Hall of Fame wall.  Thank you so much Plotsky Medical Group!

Student places 2nd in MD Design Contest

April 26, 2007

10th grader, Natalie Liguori placed 2nd for 9-12 graders in the 2007 MICCA Graphic Art Student contest for the state of Maryland. The criteria were to create something completely computer generated, mostly freehand, show originality, demonstrate elements of creative expression, be balanced with the use of space, be unified so that all pieces flow with one another.

Natalie’s work is an outstanding piece which deserves commendation. She chose to create a self portrait with Adobe Photoshop using typography to show the shades and tints on her face.

Natalie was be honored at the MICCA Conference held at the Baltimore Convention Center April 24th – 26th, 2007.

The other DHS submissions were by senior, Sina Hassan and junior, Ramona Hernandez. Congratulations to all for excellent work!
