Allow myself to introduce... myself!

Mr. Brown on his wedding day.

I am a teacher in Montgomery County Public Schools, MD where I teach advanced web tools, programming, and website development at Damascus High School in Damascus, MD.

I write curriculum for web related classes in MCPS and teach adult education courses for teachers wanting to refresh their skills in the web. I am also a member of The Web Standards Project Education Task Force. Promoting best practices (aka Web Standards) has been a standard practice for some time now. I see that the work arena is beginning to accept standards and feel that the education programs in the world should be preparing students to be competitive in this field.

I also attend as many Refresh DC meetings as possible because this field excites me and I aw at how much I still have to learn. A byproduct of attending has been meeting so many cool like minded people that share the passion. It is important to pass on to students that they should become active in organizations with people who share their interests.

This Site

This site is an extension of my classroom. I use it to deliver my daily warm ups, share resources, and deliver assignments. In addition, I use the site as a platform to promote standards in education and pass what I can to other educators, especially in the web design field(s).

I also believe that the community should be involved in teaching my students. I have set up a system where my students will listen to a guest speaker around once a week. I thought that this site would lend itself nicely to recording those connections by publishing Interviews with professional who are not local and place to publish content from those who are (podcast, presentations, etc).

The goal is to offer as many resources as possible to anyone interested in this field.

What's mine and what's yours?

As with anything if you see something you'd like to have, use, or change ask. Chances are that I'll give it to you and the 5 other things I have similar to it. All of the work (assignments, lectures, resources, etc, in other words my work) are licensed under a creative commons Attribution-Noncommercial-Share Alike 3.0 United States license. Please also understand that some of my work is in fact others, modifications of others, or inspired by others and in most places I have attributed that work.

I don't want a good or great high school web design program, I want to offer my students the best program I can put together.

As a teacher it is often frustrating to constantly give and give without any recognition or acknowledgment from the people who use your 'stuff' in order to not have to do it themselves. If you use something and make it better, send it to me. I'd love to use it.

If you have any other questions about what you can use email me [mrbrown at teachmetheweb dot org] or refer to the license in the footer.

My Students

Damascus High School students are the best! There is no other place I have taught that rendered so many students who were so excited about learning technology skills. It is an honor and inspiring to teach this bunch.

My students identities are protected because they are minors. I will use names and maybe pictures but never both in combination. If you feel uncomfortable with anything you've seen about yourself on this site please see me in person to discuss, I would be happy to accommodate you.
